Liberate Tate is the campaign to challenge the long term support for BP by the Tate, and in particular Tate Britain. The reversal of the assumed axis of support – it is the Tate that supports BP, rather than the conventional assumption that corporations support the arts – is fundamental to understanding the operations of power.) The Tate receives money and BP gain a ‘social license to operate’, i.e. “a perception of making a positive contribution to society.” If changing culture is the key to addressing environmental crisis (including climate change), then this is a critical issue and point where change could make a significant difference.
